Mr Men Cookbook: Week 7 Mr Small's Fairy Cakes

Squidge was having fun doing other things yesterday so decided that he'd do his Mr Men cooking today instead. What better way to start a Monday morning than with Mr Small's Fairy Cakes? :)

He measured out 4oz of self raising flour, 4oz of caster sugar, and 4oz of butter. We didn't have any baking powder so instead of 1tsp of that I showed him that if you added a third of a teaspoon of baking soda to two thirds of a teaspoon of cream of tartar it amounts to the same thing. He mixed this in with the flour, then added the caster sugar and butter along with two eggs, and whisked it with the electric whisk (which seemed preferable to the wooden spoon the recipe called for).

It said it made 14-15 but it filled 18 cases for us. We put them on gasmark 4 for about twenty minutes. While they cooked he measured out 4oz of icing sugar and 4oz of butter, and whisked these together with a few drops of vanilla extract. We still had ten minutes left so Squidge and Moppet went on the trampoline while we waited, but that's not strictly necessary for the recipe.

Once the cakes had cooled, Squidge started to cut the centres out to cut them in half to make the fairy wings, but lost interest and asked me to do it while he went and made himself some lunch and danced in his pants. Once the little circles were all out he cut them all in half, and we put a spoonful of buttercream into each little hole, and added two wings.

We missed out the 'dusting with icing sugar' step in favour of just eating some straight away :) Moppet is now sitting on the floor with a bowl of them, eating the buttercream out of the middles with a spoon and leaving the cake. Yum! :)
